IV Iron Infusion Questions

IV iron dosing is customized based on your lab results, symptoms, and provider assessment. Most patients receive 200 mg infusions, typically requiring a series of treatments to restore iron levels.

Patients may require five 200 mg infusions, though some may need fewer, and in some cases, a single infusion may be sufficient.

We also offer a 500 mg infusion option for patients who may benefit from higher dosing in fewer visits.

Your provider will determine the best plan for safe and effective treatment.

We offer the following pricing for IV Iron:

Individual 200mg Infusion: $337

5-Series 200mg Infusion: $269 (Each)

Individual 500mg Infusion: $674

Your provider will review your labs and create a dosing plan tailored specifically to you to ensure safe, effective treatment. No payment required until treatment. We will assist you in providing any documentation to assist you in obtaining insurance reimbursement if applicable.

If you already have recent labs showing a CBC, ferritin, serum iron, and TIBC completed within the last two weeks, additional lab work is not required. If you do not have recent results, we offer an extremely affordable $35 iron panel that can be drawn at any Labcorp location. This ensures we have accurate, up to date information to safely determine whether iron therapy is appropriate for you. When lab work is drawn, results are generally received within 24hrs.

Once recent lab work is available, our medical providers carefully review your medical history, current symptoms, and laboratory results. You will then complete a telehealth visit where the provider evaluates you directly, answers any questions, and determines whether iron therapy is appropriate. If indicated, the provider will prescribe a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs and lab findings.

In most cases, you can begin treatment the same day we receive and review your lab work. Once labs are available, our providers complete a telehealth evaluation and, if appropriate, your first infusion can be scheduled immediately.

Who Should Consider an IV Iron Infusion?

An IV iron infusion may be the right choice if oral supplements are not working or your body needs iron faster than pills can deliver. Here are some of the most common reasons patients choose IV iron.

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Women who lose significant blood each month often cannot keep up with iron loss through diet or oral supplements alone. As a result, IV iron replenishes stores quickly and helps restore energy between cycles.

Pregnancy

Iron needs increase significantly during the second and third trimester. When oral iron causes nausea or there is not enough time before delivery to correct levels, IV iron provides a faster path to healthy iron stores for both mother and baby.

Post Bariatric Surgery

Gastric bypass and other weight loss surgeries reduce the absorptive surface of the gut. Because of this, many patients develop chronic iron deficiency within 6 to 12 months, even with oral supplements. IV iron bypasses the gut entirely and delivers results more reliably.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's and Celiac)

Chronic inflammation in the digestive tract interferes with iron absorption and often makes oral supplements difficult to tolerate. For these patients, IV iron provides a more comfortable and effective alternative.

Chronic Kidney Disease

Iron deficiency is extremely common in patients with CKD, especially those on dialysis. IV iron is considered the standard of care in this population because oral iron is poorly absorbed when kidney function is compromised.

Endurance Athletes

Runners, cyclists, and other endurance athletes are at higher risk of iron depletion due to increased red blood cell turnover and iron losses through sweat. IV iron can help restore performance levels faster than oral supplementation, especially during peak training seasons.

Chronic Fatigue and Unexplained Low Energy

Some patients experience persistent fatigue, brain fog, and low stamina that trace back to low ferritin levels. In these cases, IV iron can produce a noticeable improvement in energy within days of treatment.

Iron Infusion Brands Compared

Several FDA approved IV iron formulations are available, and each has its own infusion time, dosing schedule, and clinical profile. Here is how the most commonly used brands compare.

Iron Sucrose (Venofer)

Iron sucrose is one of the most widely used IV iron formulations. Infusions are typically 100 to 200 mg per session, delivered in as little as 3 to 10 minutes. Most patients need 5 to 10 sessions to complete a full course.

It has a strong safety record with a low rate of serious reactions, making it a trusted first line choice. Flare MD uses iron sucrose for all iron infusion services.

Ferric Carboxymaltose (Injectafer)

Injectafer allows larger doses per session, typically 750 mg, which means fewer visits. Most patients complete their course in just 2 to 3 infusions, each taking about 15 minutes.

It is a popular choice for patients who need rapid repletion, such as those preparing for surgery or managing severe deficiency. However, it carries a known risk of hypophosphatemia (low phosphorus), especially with repeated doses.

Iron Dextran (INFeD / Dexferrum)

Iron dextran can be given in a single large dose of up to 1,000 mg, which makes it appealing when minimal visits are preferred. On the other hand, it requires a longer infusion time, usually 4 to 6 hours, and carries a slightly higher risk of allergic reactions.

A test dose is typically administered first. While still used, it has become less common as newer formulations have become available.

Ferumoxytol (Feraheme)

Feraheme is one of the fastest IV iron options. It delivers up to 510 mg per session in about 15 minutes, with most patients finishing treatment in just 2 visits.

Originally developed for patients with chronic kidney disease, it is now used more broadly. It does carry a boxed warning for rare but serious allergic reactions, so it is typically administered in settings equipped for monitoring.

If you already have recent labs, we will review them. If not, we offer an affordable $35 iron panel to get you started quickly.

After reviewing your medical history, allergies, symptoms and lab work. A licensed provider will complete a telehealth exam and decide on a treatment plan. Answering any of your questions along the way.

Once your telehealth visit is complete and treatment is approved, your iron infusion is scheduled and administered at home or in clinic for maximum convenience and flexibility.

What to Expect During Your IV Iron Infusion

Before Your Infusion

Your provider will review recent lab work, including hemoglobin, ferritin, and iron saturation levels. If you do not have recent labs, we can order them for you.

You will also complete a brief medical intake covering your health history, current medications, and any allergies.

During the Infusion

A small IV line is placed in your arm, and the iron solution is infused directly into your bloodstream. Depending on the dose and formulation, the infusion takes anywhere from a few minutes to about 30 minutes.

Most patients relax comfortably during the process. Some people notice a brief warm sensation or a mild metallic taste, both of which are normal and pass quickly.

After the Infusion

You will rest for a short observation period, typically 15 to 30 minutes, before heading home. There are no activity restrictions, so you can return to your normal routine right away.

Mild soreness at the IV site may occur and usually resolves within a day. Serious side effects are rare, but your provider will discuss what to watch for before you leave.

Oral Iron vs. IV Iron: Which Is Right for You?

Why Oral Iron Falls Short for Some Patients

The body absorbs only about 10% of oral iron on a good day. For patients with GI conditions, prior surgery, or chronic inflammation, absorption can be even lower.

Common side effects like nausea, constipation, and stomach cramps cause many patients to stop taking their pills before iron levels recover. Even when patients stick with the regimen, it can take three to six months of daily dosing to see meaningful improvement.

How IV Iron Compares

IV iron works differently because it goes directly into the bloodstream. Absorption is nearly 100%, and there is no GI discomfort. Most patients begin to feel improved energy within days rather than weeks, and labs typically show measurable improvement within 2 to 4 weeks.

When IV Iron Is the Better Fit

IV iron tends to be the better choice when oral iron has not worked after several weeks, when GI side effects make pills hard to tolerate, or when iron levels need to come up quickly for medical reasons.

If you are unsure which option is right for you, your provider can help you decide based on your labs and health history. To learn more about the difference between low iron and iron deficiency anemia, visit our guide to iron deficiency vs. iron deficiency anemia.

Recovery and Results After Your Iron Infusion

When You Will Feel the Difference

Many people report noticeable improvement in energy and mental clarity within 2 to 5 days of their first infusion. The timeline varies depending on how low your levels were at the start, but most patients feel meaningfully better within the first one to two weeks.

What Your Labs Will Show

Lab results take a bit longer to catch up. Hemoglobin typically begins rising within 1 to 2 weeks, and ferritin levels (which reflect your body’s stored iron) usually normalize within 4 to 8 weeks. Your provider will schedule follow up labs about 4 to 6 weeks after your infusion to confirm your levels are trending in the right direction.

Will You Need More Infusions?

Whether you need additional infusions depends on the cause of your deficiency. Patients with a one time deficit, like post surgical recovery, may only need a single course.

On the other hand, those with ongoing losses from heavy periods, chronic conditions, or dietary factors may benefit from maintenance infusions every 3 to 6 months.

Are iron infusions safe?

All medical treatments carry some level of risk. However, iron sucrose has a very low rate of serious reactions, estimated at approximately 1 in 200,000 administrations. Most patients tolerate treatment well.

Patients are monitored during and after the infusion, and our clinical team is trained and prepared to promptly manage any reaction should one occur.

Your first iron infusion typically takes about 1 hour to infuse, followed by a 30 minute observation period for safety.

Subsequent infusions are shorter, usually 15 minutes to infuse, with the same 30 minute observation period afterward. During the observation time, you may choose to receive a vitamin infusion, so the time is used efficiently rather than wasted.

Many patients notice improved energy within a few days to two weeks after their first infusion. Ferritin and hemoglobin levels typically rise gradually over four to eight weeks. Your provider will recommend follow up labs to confirm your response and adjust the plan if needed.

$337 for a single 200 mg infusion, $269 each in a 5 series, or $674 for a single 500 mg infusion. The $35 iron lab panel at Labcorp is separate. In clinic visits receive a 10 percent discount off the at home price. For comparison, hospital and specialty infusion centers typically charge $799 to over $3,000 per session once facility and administration fees are added.

Just two things: normal saline and Iron Sucrose, the generic for Venofer. Nothing else is added. Iron Sucrose is FDA approved, AA rated, and has one of the longest safety records of any IV iron product on the market.

Yes. Flare MD offers iv iron infusions both at home and in our private clinic. A licensed clinician arrives at your home with everything needed for treatment, monitors you throughout the infusion, and stays for a brief observation period afterward. At home is the most popular choice for patients with young children, busy schedules, or mobility limitations. In clinic visits receive a 10 percent discount.

No referral is required. Our medical providers can evaluate you directly through a brief telehealth visit, review your lab work, and prescribe treatment if appropriate. If you do not have recent labs, we offer an affordable $35 iron panel at any Labcorp location with results typically back within 24 hours.

Iron infusions are not appropriate for patients with iron overload conditions such as hemochromatosis, an active infection, or a known hypersensitivity to IV iron. Your Flare MD provider screens for all of these during your telehealth visit before any treatment is approved.
