Therapeutic phlebotomy is the controlled removal of a prescribed volume of blood. It is used to lower elevated hemoglobin, hematocrit and iron levels in conditions like hemochromatosis and testosterone related erythrocytosis.
No payment required. Medical intake. Quick consult.
From first request to first session in four steps.
Submit a booking request by phone call, text, or online form. You will then receive an immediate response and a confirmation within 15 minutes.
A CBC completed within the last 30 days is required so your provider can evaluate your hemoglobin and hematocrit. If you do not have recent labs, we may be able to perform point of care testing in clinic for same day service.
A licensed provider reviews your history, allergies, symptoms and lab work, completes a telehealth exam and then builds your treatment plan.
Once treatment is approved, your session is scheduled and performed at home or in clinic.
No referral is required. Instead, our medical providers can evaluate you directly and prescribe treatment if appropriate. If your doctor has already ordered therapeutic phlebotomy, we gladly accept those orders too.
In most cases, you can begin treatment the same day we review a CBC completed within the last 30 days. Need new labs? Point of care testing may be available in clinic for same day service.

Therapeutic phlebotomy may be prescribed when your blood carries too many red blood cells or too much iron.
For a medical overview of iron overload, see the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guide to hemochromatosis.
Therapeutic phlebotomy is not appropriate for patients with anemia or low hemoglobin and hematocrit, uncontrolled heart or lung conditions, or an active infection. Your Flare MD provider screens for these with your CBC and health history before any treatment is approved.
Your provider reviews a CBC from the last 30 days, focusing on your hemoglobin and hematocrit. You also complete a brief medical intake covering your health history, current medications and any allergies.
Your session begins with 1 liter of IV fluids. A small needle is placed in a vein in your arm and a prescribed volume of blood is then removed. The draw itself usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.
You rest for a short observation period before your appointment is completed. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day.
Typically about one unit, roughly 500 mL, which is similar to a standard blood donation. Your provider sets the exact volume and frequency based on your labs and condition.
Unlike blood donation, every Flare MD phlebotomy includes 1 liter of IV fluids before your draw, so most patients avoid the blood pressure drop that donating blood can cause.
| Factor | Blood donation | Therapeutic phlebotomy |
|---|---|---|
| IV fluids | None. Lightheadedness from a drop in blood pressure is common | 1 liter of IV fluids before your draw helps prevent the blood pressure drop |
| Purpose | A volunteer gift to help others | A prescribed treatment for your own condition |
| Eligibility | Strict donor rules can defer you for high hematocrit, medications or medical conditions | Based on your labs and a provider evaluation |
| Schedule | Limited by donation center rules, typically every 8 weeks | Set by your provider, as often as your labs require |
| Follow up | No clinical follow up | Hemoglobin and hematocrit tracked as part of a treatment plan |
No risk, quick provider consult. If you qualify, same day treatment may be available.

Blood donation centers follow strict donor rules and can defer you for high hematocrit, medications or medical conditions, and donation does not include clinical follow up. Flare MD sessions are prescribed, tracked against your labs, and include 1 liter of IV fluids before your draw, which helps prevent the blood pressure drop that donating blood can cause.
Yes. A licensed clinician arrives at your home with everything needed for treatment, monitors you throughout the session, and stays for a brief observation period afterward.
Flare MD is direct pay. However, we provide HSA and FSA receipts you can submit toward your eligible accounts.
Frequency is customized to your condition, your lab results, and your provider's assessment. Some patients need a short series of sessions to bring levels down, while others maintain with periodic sessions a few times a year.
Your visit includes 1 liter of IV fluids, the blood draw itself, which usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, and a short observation period before your appointment is completed.
All medical treatments carry some level of risk. The most common side effects are mild, such as bruising at the needle site, lightheadedness or fatigue. We administer 1 liter of IV fluids before every phlebotomy, which helps prevent the blood pressure drop many people experience when donating blood. Patients are monitored during and after each session, and our clinical team is trained and prepared to promptly manage any reaction should one occur.
