Ultrasound Guided IV Therapy

First stick, no problem.

Ultrasound IV therapy uses a live image of your veins to find the healthiest vein and guide the catheter into place, usually on the very first attempt. It is the answer for patients whose veins are small, deep, rolling or just plain hard to find.

No extra appointment. Added to your visit. Subject to availability.

How to Get an Ultrasound Guided IV

From booking request to first stick in four steps.

1

Booking

Submit a booking request for any IV service by phone call, text, or online form and ask for ultrasound guided placement. You will receive a confirmation within 15 minutes.

2

Availability check

We confirm that an ultrasound trained provider and equipment are available for your visit, whether you are booking mobile service or a clinic appointment.

3

Vein mapping

Before any needle is used, your provider scans your arm with a small ultrasound probe to map your veins and choose the healthiest, most comfortable site.

4

Guided placement

Watching the live image, your provider guides the catheter into the vein. Once your line is in, your IV therapy begins right away.

Do I need to prepare?

No prep or lab work is required. Just request ultrasound guidance when you book so we can confirm availability. Drinking water before your visit always helps your veins, but it is not required.

Can I add it day of?

Often, yes. If a standard IV attempt proves difficult during your visit, your provider can add ultrasound guidance on the spot whenever the equipment is on hand. Requesting it at booking is the surest way to guarantee it.

What if my veins are always missed?

You are exactly who this service is for. Tell us about your history of difficult sticks when you book and we will plan your visit around a first stick experience.

Is it right for you

Who Benefits From Ultrasound Guided IV Placement?

Roughly 1 in 9 adults has veins that are difficult to access with a standard IV. If any of these sound familiar, ultrasound guidance was made for you.

For the clinical evidence behind ultrasound guidance, see this systematic review in American Family Physician.

Do I need difficult veins to choose it?

No. Ultrasound guidance is open to any patient who wants the most comfortable, most precise IV placement available. It is optional when your veins are easy and invaluable when they are not. Your Flare MD provider will always be honest about whether it is worth adding for you.

Your visit

What to Expect During Placement

Before

Your provider reviews your intake and asks about your IV history, including past difficult sticks or blown veins, so your visit is planned around getting access right the first time.

During

A small amount of gel is applied to your arm and your provider scans with a handheld ultrasound probe to map your veins. Watching the live image, they guide a small catheter into the chosen vein. The scan and placement usually add only a few minutes to your visit.

After

Nothing changes about your recovery. The gel wipes clean, your line is secured and your IV therapy runs exactly as it normally would.

Does the ultrasound hurt?

Not at all. The ultrasound is a smooth probe resting on your skin, the same painless imaging used during pregnancy. Most patients report less discomfort overall because placement succeeds with fewer attempts.

The difference, by the numbers

Standard IV vs. Ultrasound Guided IV

In a review of ten clinical studies, ultrasound guidance raised first attempt IV success from 63% to 77%, and patients were measurably more satisfied with their care.

What Patients Say

Common questions

Ultrasound IV Therapy FAQs

What is ultrasound IV therapy?

Ultrasound IV therapy is standard IV placement with a major upgrade. Your provider uses a handheld ultrasound probe to see your veins on a live screen, then guides the catheter into the healthiest vein, usually on the first attempt.

How much does it cost?

Ultrasound guided placement is a flat $197 add on to any Flare MD IV service. There is no separate appointment and no additional fee beyond your chosen IV therapy.

Can I get an ultrasound guided IV at home?

Yes. Our mobile team can bring ultrasound guidance to you, and it is also available at our clinics. Because it requires a trained provider and equipment, availability is confirmed when you book.

Does it hurt more than a regular IV?

No. The ultrasound itself is completely painless, and most patients find the overall experience more comfortable because placement succeeds with fewer needle sticks.

Who should consider it?

Anyone with a history of multiple sticks, small or rolling veins, dehydration, vein scarring from chemotherapy or frequent IVs, or veins that are simply hard to see or feel. It is also a comfort upgrade for anyone who dreads needles.

Does ultrasound guidance really work?

Yes. A review of ten clinical studies found first attempt success rose from 63% to 77% with ultrasound guidance, with fewer total attempts and higher patient satisfaction.

Do I need it if my veins are usually easy?

No. It is entirely optional. If your veins are reliable, standard placement works great. Ultrasound guidance earns its keep when access is difficult or when you simply want the most precise placement available.

Can I add it during my visit if the first attempt fails?

Often, yes. When the equipment is on hand, your provider can add it on the spot. Requesting it when you book is the surest way to guarantee availability.

Can I use HSA or FSA funds?

Yes. HSA and FSA receipts are available for all Flare MD services, including the ultrasound guided placement add on.

Is ultrasound safe?

Completely. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation. It is the same imaging technology trusted during pregnancy and is painless on the skin.
